The budget must have been the biggest issue though, because many/most of the series regular actors are really not in the least bit good. Now as much as I'm ripping on this show there are a few decent episodes and stories. "Star Trek: TNG" which had begun in '87, even those effects were better than these. So many of the effects are so bad it's almost painful. I imagine this never would have been made if it didn't have Rodenberry's name attached to it. I realize this probably had a minuscule budget, but even then so many of the stories not only don't make sense they are absolutely terribly written! I don't think Gene Rodenberry (for all those that don't know him he is the creator of "Star Trek") would have had this show in mind when he created it. We here in the states only have seasons 3&4 (I'm not sure if 5 is) on DVD.
Now I have never seen the supposedly only good season which was Season 1. My advice.don't watch in the first place, as there are MUCH better sci-fi shows that will satisfy (such as Babylon 5, Stargate SG-1 or any of the Star Trek series-even Deep Space 9). This show is a great example of a show that starts well and ultimately is cast adrift to float in limbo. And, for several seasons I watched and waited and waited and then NOTHING! I got sick of waiting and stopped watching-and, by that time, so had most of the audience. This also occurred with the characters-as my favorite characters were killed off and replaced by imminently forgettable ones. Unfortunately, many times these story lines were completely forgotten or contradicted-as if the writing staff was periodically fired and completely replaced. However, as the series continued, I kept waiting for these paranoid machinations to pan out and SOMETHING of value be revealed. The first season of this series was great and its paranoid underpinnings were fantastic.
EARTH FINAL CONFLICT SEASON 5 DVD TV
Keep your expectations low and you will find that it isn't nearly as bad as some people claim.It's rare to see a TV series start so strong and lose its way so quickly. So despite some big flaws I think the final season is worth seeing if you are a fan of the previous 4 seasons. the last 2 minutes or so before the final fade to black) as the best of any of the Roddenberry created series. The "Final Conflict" is a tad anti-climactic but is also very fitting and true to the ideals that the show started with. Liam Kincade returns in the final episode in what I thought was a fitting way in keeping with his character's heritage. Sandoval continues his fall into darkness while secretly plotting against his new alien allies. Zo'or receives a rather odd and yet fitting sex-change as he becomes a female Atavus.
Kevin Kilner returns for 2 episodes which makes the rather cringe-worthy actions scenes seem bearable. Another episode about a kangaroo court and a tyrannical judge bent on punishing alien "collaborators" is also quite good. Another episode that depicts a Guantanamo'esqe prison for aliens asks some interesting questions. A guest appearance by Margot Kidder is an early bright spot.
There are several good episodes that I think are a bit underrated. Now having said all that, Season 5 isn't all bad. So basically the quality of the show which had somewhat stabilized by season 4 took a big hit. This is evident in the costume design, set reuse and lack of location shooting. A big reason for this is probably that the budget for the final season was cut. There is also a feeling that the show is rushed. This didn't have to be a bad thing however but many of the episodes seem to be just action pieces with little real depth or substance. Season 5 paints a very black and white universe where the aliens only agenda is to take us over and use us as food. But, the problem is that these Atavus aren't nearly as interesting or compelling as their decedents the Taelons had been. They perished leaving the resurrected Atavus race who had lain dormant on earth for eons. The final chapter of the E:FC saga sees the Taelons all but destroyed. When the 5th season aired it met with disdain and displeasure from fans of the show who had continued to watch this interesting (but flawed) series. That said, it is still worth checking out. The final season of Gene Roddenberry's Earth:Final Conflict is without a doubt the worst of the series' 5 seasons.
